IIT Kharagpur has released the JAM 2027 syllabus for Economics, and it is the biggest revision since the paper was introduced. If you are preparing for JAM 2027, you need three things clearly answered: what exactly changed, whether your current preparation and the old PYQs still hold, and what the dates and seats look like. This post answers all three.
One thing before we start. We did not skim the two PDFs and guess. We mapped the 2026 syllabus and the 2027 syllabus line by line into a single structure, and then placed all 360 PYQs from 2021 to 2026 inside that structure. Every claim below comes from that mapping.
JAM 2027: Key Dates and Facts
As per the official JAM 2027 poster released by IIT Kharagpur (the organising institute this year):
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Registration opens (JOAPS) | 5 September 2026 |
| Last date to apply | 12 October 2026 |
| Exam day | Sunday, 14 February 2027 |
| Economics (EN) session | Afternoon, 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM |
| Result | 18 March 2027 |
Application fee: Rs. 1000 (Female/SC/ST/PwD) and Rs. 2000 (all others) for one paper. Official portal: jam.iitkgp.ac.in. All dates are as announced and can be revised, so verify on the portal before you apply.
The exam pattern is unchanged: 60 questions, 100 marks, 3 hours. 30 MCQs, 10 MSQs and 20 NAT questions. Negative marking applies only to MCQs (one third of the marks of the question). MSQ and NAT have no negative marking, but MSQ has no partial credit either.
The Big Picture: Your Preparation Is Safe
Here is the summary students actually need before the details:
| Change | Count | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Subtopics unchanged | 85 | The core of every subject is exactly where it was. All six years of PYQs remain fully relevant. |
| Subtopics added | 32 | Mostly in Mathematics, Statistics and Macroeconomics. The new syllabus is more detailed and more quantitative. |
| Subtopics deleted | 4 | Worth barely 10 of 600 PYQ marks over six years. The deletions change almost nothing. |
So the 2027 change is expansion, not deletion. If you have already started preparing, nothing you have studied is wasted. What the change does is add new places to score, and the students who cover the new material early will collect those marks cheaply, because there are no PYQs to warn everyone else what is coming.
What Is Deleted
Removed as headings
- Complex numbers and De Moivre’s theorem (Mathematics). One question in six years.
- Indian economy before 1950: transfer of tribute, deindustrialization of India.
- Banking system in India as a separate unit. The content (CRR, SLR, policy tools) survives inside the new Macro money unit, so do not throw your notes away.
- Savings and investment rates in India.
Quietly dropped from the text
These do not show up in any “what changed” list you will find elsewhere, because you only catch them by comparing the documents line by line:
- Random walk model of consumption (Macro).
- Romer and Schumpeterian growth models by name. Endogenous growth now means the AK model only.
- Business cycles facts and features as a unit. Classical vs Keynesian thinking survives inside IS-LM.
- The 1991 BoP crisis as a named item. It is folded into economic reforms.
What Is Added, Subject by Subject
Mathematics
- Monotonicity and inverse functions
- Logarithms and elasticities, with the log derivative interpretation
- Hessian matrix and its use in optimization
- Steady state, equilibrium and basic stability, with phase diagram intuition
- Matrix inverse and conditions for invertibility, basic diagonalization
- KKT conditions and complementary slackness for inequality constraints
Also note: eigenvalues and eigenvectors are now capped at “primarily 2×2”, so do not over invest in 3×3 machinery. Everything else in Maths is word for word the old syllabus.
Statistics
- A full Descriptive Statistics unit: charts, frequency distributions, central tendency, dispersion, moments, skewness, kurtosis. This was being asked in PYQs all along; now it is official.
- Index numbers. This one is new in the true sense: never asked before.
- Markov and Chebyshev inequalities, moment generating function
- Chi square, t and F distributions and their relation to the Normal
- Gauss Markov theorem and BLUE, OLS compared with Method of Moments and Maximum Likelihood
Nothing is deleted in Statistics. It is the subject the new syllabus upgrades the most, and it was already rising in the paper (27 marks in 2025).
Microeconomics
- A full perfect competition unit: profit maximization, individual and market supply, consumer and producer surplus
- Government intervention in competitive markets: commodity taxes, subsidies, MSP, price ceilings and floors
- Sequential move games, backward induction, subgame perfect equilibrium; Stackelberg named alongside Cournot and Bertrand
- Pigouvian taxes and subsidies, the Samuelson condition and Lindahl pricing for public goods
Nothing is deleted in Micro. Keep in mind that Micro was already the largest subject in the paper, 29 marks on average and 34 in 2026, and the 2027 text makes it larger.
Macroeconomics: four brand new units
Macro gets the largest expansion of any subject: 12 of the 32 new subtopics. Four units have no PYQ history at all:
- Production function: Cobb Douglas, total factor productivity, technological progress, cost functions
- Labour demand and labour supply: consumption leisure framework, capital demand and investment, structural, frictional and search unemployment
- Asset pricing: bond and stock pricing, Gordon growth model, Tobin’s q, term structure and yield curve
- Fiscal policy in two period models: government budget constraint, distortionary vs non distortionary taxes, Laffer curve, Ricardian equivalence
Because zero PYQs exist for these units, the 2027 questions here will be first generation: standard, textbook level, and very collectable for the prepared. The old units also expand inside: money now includes the money multiplier, Baumol Tobin and seigniorage; the short run adds the liquidity trap, Taylor rule and Fisher equation; growth adds convergence, the golden rule and the Solow residual; open economy adds interest parity, the impossible trinity and PPP.
Indian Economy
The subject moves from history to the present. The colonial economy block is gone, and in come inclusive growth and SDG targets, inflation targeting, demographic dividend, food security, the service sector’s role in growth, and foreign exchange reserves. Poverty, inequality and unemployment now sit in one integrated unit.
What Actually Gets Asked: Marks by Subject, 2021 to 2026
Syllabus tells you what can be asked. PYQs tell you what is asked. Here is every year’s marks split by subject from our tagging of all 360 questions:
| Subject | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microeconomics | 25 | 26 | 24 | 33 | 32 | 34 |
| Macroeconomics | 25 | 23 | 19 | 22 | 27 | 29 |
| Statistics | 15 | 14 | 20 | 17 | 27 | 17 |
| Mathematics | 25 | 22 | 28 | 14 | 4 | 5 |
| Indian Economy | 10 | 15 | 9 | 14 | 10 | 15 |
Two things to read off this table. Micro has risen from 25 to 34 marks and is now the centre of the paper. And pure Maths collapsed from 25 marks to 4 or 5, but the maths did not leave the paper. It moved inside economics questions, and the 2027 syllabus formally expands it. Treat Maths as the language of the paper, not as a subject you can skip.
Seat Matrix: MSc Economics Through JAM
| Institute | Programme | Seats (JAM 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| IIT Delhi | MSc Economics | 15 |
| IIT Kanpur | MSc Economics | 24 |
| IIT Roorkee | MSc Economics | 13 |
| Total | 52 |
Source: JAM 2026 Admission Brochure. You will find much larger seat numbers on many coaching websites; they are not from the official brochure. The JAM 2027 brochure arrives with registration, and we will update this table the day it is out. Admission through JAM is also possible to programmes at IISERs and other CFTIs via CCMN, beyond these three IITs.
Fifty two seats, thousands of aspirants. That single number is why strategy matters more in JAM Economics than in almost any other masters entrance. A handful of questions separates rank 40 from rank 400.

How to Prepare for JAM 2027
You have a little over 23 weeks from registration to exam day, and your 5th semester exams sit right in the middle of them. A plan that ignores November and December fails in November and December. Our JAM 2027 batch is built around that reality: full coverage of the new syllabus including the four new Macro units, topic-wise PYQ practice in the exam’s own format (MCQ, MSQ and NAT separately), and a schedule that survives your college exams.

FAQs
Is the JAM 2027 Economics syllabus completely different from 2026?
No. 85 subtopics are unchanged, 32 are added and only 4 are deleted. The change is expansion, mainly in Mathematics, Statistics and Macroeconomics. Preparation done on the old syllabus carries over fully.
Are old PYQs still useful for JAM 2027?
Yes, more than ever. The deleted topics account for roughly 10 of 600 PYQ marks over six years. Everything else that was ever asked is still in the syllabus, and the new topics have no PYQs at all, so past papers remain the single best predictor of the paper.
When is the JAM 2027 exam?
Sunday, 14 February 2027. Economics is in the afternoon session, 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Registration opens 5 September 2026 and closes 12 October 2026 on the JOAPS portal of IIT Kharagpur.
Who is eligible for JAM 2027?
Students who have completed an undergraduate degree, or are in the final year of one, can appear. Any stream is allowed for the Economics paper; you do not need an economics degree to write it. Admission to a specific IIT programme is subject to that institute’s eligibility requirements listed in the admission brochure.
How many seats are there for MSc Economics through JAM?
As per the JAM 2026 brochure, 52 seats across IIT Delhi (15), IIT Kanpur (24) and IIT Roorkee (13). The 2027 brochure will confirm the updated matrix, and additional admissions are possible at other institutes through CCMN.
What is the exam pattern for JAM Economics?
60 questions, 100 marks, 3 hours, computer based. Section A has 30 MCQs, Section B has 10 MSQs, Section C has 20 NAT questions. Only MCQs carry negative marking. Note that over the last six years, one in three questions has been NAT, so practice typing numerical answers, not just eliminating options.
